Our Mission

Big Tings aims to be a central hub for wellness for rangatahi (youth) and whānau in New Zealand and beyond, transforming perceptions of mental health and connecting individuals to existing resources.

Our mission is to create a one stop shop for all tings wellness for rangatahi (youth), whanau and whaiora (those seeking wellness) through connection.

While the current system is overwhelmed, we focus on connecting people to resources rather than duplicating services. We believe that learning about wellness can be fun and engaging through interactive events.

Healing through connection.

Our Vision

Big Tings aims to serve as the bridge between the community and the education and mental health systems, fostering an environment where everyone can contribute their strengths in a collaborative and cohesive manner. We are aiming to connect mental, cultural and holistic practices to ensure whaiora (those seeking wellness) get access to mental health support that is clinically indicated, culturally appropriate and within a timely manner.

Our vision is to advance the movement toward an equitable system, ensuring that Māori and Pasifika communities have access to culturally appropriate and sensitive support. We seek to educate, rangatahi (youth), and whānau about the significance of wellness and help them understand the workings of their minds.

Connection is the key.

Our Why

  • Government-funded services are overwhelmed, leading to compassion fatigue among staff and a lack of resources for those in need.

  • Due to full capacity in government-funded services, individuals seeking support often face long waitlists, delaying vital care.

  • NGOs struggle to provide adequate support to clients with moderate to severe mental health issues due to limited resources.

  • The sheer number of community services available can make it difficult for individuals to navigate and find the right help.

  • Youth anxiety, depression, and stress are on the rise, signaling a growing mental health crisis among the younger population.

  • New Zealand has one of the highest suicide rates, especially among young Māori and Pasifika individuals, underscoring the urgency of addressing these issues.

  • School Guidance Counsellors are stretched thin, with an average ratio of 1000 students to 1 counselor, making it hard to meet the needs of students.

  • Stigma, cost, and availability of services prevent many individuals from seeking the help they need to improve their mental health.

  • There is a pressing need for services that are responsive to the cultural needs of diverse populations, particularly Māori and Pasifika.

  • Focusing on preventive measures and early intervention is crucial to addressing mental health issues effectively and creating long-term solutions.

Our Values & Goals

CREATE a comprehensive resource library integarted with AI to be able to provide personalised mental health resource reports.

CONNECT with rangatahi, whaiora & whanau & guide them to resources and support which they need.

COLLABORATE with like minded individuals and organisations who want to create a brighter future for the next generation.

Place CULTURE at the forefront of all our services and initiatives, ensuring  understanding of Māori and Pasifika values as we strive for an equitable system.

Build a COMMUNITY where everyone believes in themselves and is motivated to share their gifts with others.

At Big Tings, we embrace the Te Whare Tapa Whā and Fonofale models, which offer a holistic view of well-being by balancing various health dimensions. Originally designed for Māori and Pasifika well-being, we believe these models are valuable for everyone.

We aim to promote a more equitable society by integrating these models into our services. By highlighting their comprehensive approach, we ensure that our health initiatives are culturally sensitive and impactful.

Our Pillars of Connection are rooted in these models, guiding us in connecting the community with services and activities that reflect these foundational principles. We aim to create a society that understands and benefits from these inclusive values.

The Rainbow of Connection represents the essential elements of holistic wellness, each one beautifully blending to create a life full of balance and vibrancy. By nurturing our connections to each of these vibrant colours, we cultivate a sense of belonging, purpose, and resilience.

These connections empower personal growth and overall wellness, enabling us to live in harmony with ourselves, others, and the world around us. When each colour in the Rainbow of Connection is strengthened, we build a solid foundation that supports our ability to thrive mentally, physically, and emotionally—creating a flourishing, connected life in all areas.

Our Framework

Fonofale Model

The Fonofale Model, developed by Fuimaono Karl Pulotu-Endemann in 1984, symbolises the elements of well-being for Pasifika communities. It is illustrated by a fale (house) and consists of essential elements that work together to uphold harmony and overall health. Each component is crucial for fostering and sustaining good health and well-being. When one element is out of balance, then our overall wellbeing struggles.

Te Whare Tapa Wha

Te Whare Tapa Whā, crafted by Sir Mason Durie in 1984, illustrates health and wellness as a marae with four integral walls. Each wall symbolises a different aspect of health and wellbeing. The foundation is our bond with the land and our roots. When these elements are harmonious, we flourish, but if one or more is disrupted, our wellbeing suffers.

Talofa Lava

I’m Libby Blore, a mental health nurse and the founder of Big Tings. I am dedicated to transforming the community, mental health system and education system through meaningful connections.

Though I haven’t personally faced major mental health challenges, my career and life experiences have deeply informed my commitment to wellness. Growing up as part Samoan in a Western society has shaped my perspective on cultural identity and the impact colonisation has had on our society as a whole.

I believe that to change society, we need to focus on the next generation. By empowering young people and fostering their ability to nuture their wellness. We can create a more equitable and connected society.

I cherish my beautiful family and have a passion for glitter, the beach, sunshine, nature, and laughter. Finding a deep love for myself and my life has been a journey, and I’m excited to help others discover the same. I’m grateful to have found my purpose and look forward to bringing my vision to life through Big Tings.
