At Big Tings, we believe connection is central to wellness. True wellbeing encompasses our relationships with whānau, culture, environment, and community. Our Pillars of Connection, inspired by Te Whare Tapa Whā and Fono Fale models, highlight the need to nurture spiritual, physical, emotional, and social ties. By strengthening these connections, we build resilience and create a life of meaning and fulfilment. Through connection, we thrive both individually and collectively.

At Big Tings, we embrace the Te Whare Tapa Whā and Fonofale models, which offer a holistic view of well-being by balancing various health dimensions. Originally designed for Māori and Pasifika well-being, we believe these models are valuable for everyone.

Our mission is to promote a more equitable society by integrating these models into our services. By highlighting their comprehensive approach, we ensure that our health initiatives are culturally sensitive and impactful.

Fonofale Model

Te Whare Tapa Whā, crafted by Sir Mason Durie in 1984, illustrates health and wellness as a marae with four integral walls. Each wall symbolises a different aspect of health and wellbeing. The foundation is our bond with the land and our roots. When these elements are harmonious, we flourish, but if one or more is disrupted, our wellbeing suffers.

Te Whare Tapa Wha

The Fonofale Model, developed by Fuimaono Karl Pulotu-Endemann in 1984, symbolises the elements of well-being for Pasifika communities. It is illustrated by a fale (house) and consists of essential elements that work together to uphold harmony and overall health. Each component is crucial for fostering and sustaining good health and well-being. When one element is out of balance, then our overall wellbeing struggles.
